Great question. Lots of people mistakenly use the term apoptosis as a fancy way to say cell death. But apoptosis is just one specific kind of cell death--and there are many others. So these would all be considered different from apoptosis. The general term people use for these other types of cell death is either "non-apoptotic cell death" or "regulated necrosis".
