Great questions. This is still an open question. Cancer and degeneration are the two sides of the cell death coin. Inducing non-apoptotic cell death is being explored in various cancers. But could that cause some degeneration and vice versa? It may depend on the mechanism, tissue, and length of treatment. For short treatments, it is probably fine, but for lifelong treatments, we need to look at increased cancer risk as a possible side effect.
